Awesome, almost and oh well x 2
AWESOME
An awesome result for the North Harbour Black A side in their two-dayer against Manukau. Batting first Manukau put on 313/5 and then rather foolishly declared on a track that was drying out nicely for the batsmen.
Best of the North Harbour bowlers for that innings was Nathan Banks with 16 overs, 3/27.
There were a couple of chances put down for talented opposition batsman Glenn Phillips' wicket, one of which was made amends for in our batting reply.
Starting day two at 67/0 opener Ethan Lovich picked up where he had left off yesterday, well supported by Jeremy Houghton at the other end. He hit 104 from 124 balls to form the backbone of the batting innings and prove the point that one big score by a batsman can change the game. Ethan's dad now owes him $100 I believe!
Jeremy's 41 was well compiled and he was followed by Patrick Thomson (43) and Ullrich Boshoff (56) playing a very different style of innings to ensure victory (from 107 balls). There were a few hiccups in the lower order but because the top order had done their job victory was achieved 317/7.

ALMOST
The other A side, Burgundy, were all out for 169 chasing EDCA's 239 leaving EDCA 70 ahead. EDCA batted again and sportingly declared at 126/5 meaning Burgundy needed 197 off 41 overs. Not impossible and Jackson Tredray (who scored 63 in the first innings) opening the batting with Dan Robinson and got us off to a flyer at 55/0 after 11. But Jackson fell at 50 and no one else went on - while Nic Montgomery and Dylan Budler were there it was still looking possible but once they had gone it was always going to be uphill to get the outright.
In the end we fell 30 runs short, but there was a lot of improvement in the batting in this second innings, in approach.
BB Innings one
N Montgomery 17.4 overs 4/56
B Wojt 8 overs, 3/16
Second Innings
C Floyd 12 overs, 4/29
Scorecard here
OH WELL X 2
Black Development struggled against some very ordinary umpiring combined with not a lot of luck.
Both Black and Burgundy lost after following on. Auckland Cricket hasn't entered the results and figures into the database yet so I can't update you with those until I get them as the teams had gone by the time the Burgundy A game had finished. (I will add them in here as soon as they are done)
On Sunday and Monday we are back to a 10am start, be there 9am or whatever your coach has told you. Traffic won't be so bad cos school is out on Monday and Sunday should be good hopefully. Bring your supporters!

Day 3 report
Today was a day of luck, some good, some bad.
One boy's bad luck yesterday in the As to injury meant a development player got the call up from Burgundy. (I learned a lesson yesterday as a convenor that call ups to A can only be in the same colour ie Burgundy Dev to Burgundy A, Black Dev to Black A.)
Bjorn Wojt was promoted to Burgundy A, and Tyran van der Westhuizen, a player who had been champing at the bit to play but who we hadn't known about until a couple of days before tournament, took his chance and joined the Burgundy Development Both boys bowled really well - both grabbing wickets.
Not so lucky was the Black A and Burgundy sides who faced a wicket that had had the sprinklers left on, and was wet on arrival, having been a dustbowl the day before. The match was delayed by 30 minutes while it dried out and the result was a very unhappy day for the batsmen. Not good for cricket.
You won't see many contributions on the scorecard from the bat. Burgundy A got luckiest in winning the toss and choosing to bat, rolling Black A for 66.
The batsman's job for Burgundy wasn't a lot easier - although had they got home and watched the Ashes afterwards, they would have REALLY seen a wicket to complain about! (Actually, they would have had plenty of time to watch it this afternoon because the game finished so early, a cunning plan).
Mention must be made, both teams will agree, of a screamer of a catch by Dan Robinson. It was really spectacular (sorry Jeremy!)

Rest day Wednesday - yes!
Photos: Thursday for the A grade sides. Be there 8.30am please. In CLEAN whites, with clean teeth, and perhaps give that hair a wash... :-) This is your last year in the grade for many of you so may as well look like a human for the photo.
(Development grade photos are Friday.)
On another note: A lot of the players have been asking me about Auckland selections. Auckland Cricket have told us that players really need to focus on developing their cricket, putting in good performances, winning their games. Very few players actually make the cut for the Auckland sides, particularly as this year they are looking at Under 17 and Under 19 sides. It's a very tough thing to get into. Players, particularly in the Development grades, need to understand that and relax and enjoy your cricket, and try and get the best out of yourself as you can. Also, if you feel you are not getting a fair run. PLEASE have a quiet word to your coach. Don't be frightened to, things may get overlooked. I don't mean whine to the coach but a "look I've bowled two overs in two games, can you get the captain to remember I exist" kind of word is fine. Don't be shy. This is something that should be done by PLAYERS not parents.
With many of the games being low scoring it's very hard for captains and coaches, especially when the ultimate goal is to win.
On that note - captains you are doing a great job.
Coaches - you have the patience of saints.
Scorers - thank you so much to the parents who have helped with scoring. Love your work.
Boys - if you are scoring, please fill out ALL the fields! Who bowled it? Who caught it?
How many runs in the team total? How many wickets.
That makes the Auckland Cricket guys' job much easier. I've just realised today they are doing a manual entry of the Dev games on Cric HQ so I have put the links back on the previous pages.
Spirit of cricket mention today goes to Angus Frew. He knows why.

Day two report
Hi, sorry I didn't get around all the games today particularly to see a spectacular innings by Ullrich Boshoff for Black A, 107 not out.
I got trapped behind a score book, sadly.
Ullrich's century was the foundation of a great win by Black A against Western, the side that demolished Burgundy A the day before.
There was no good news from the other 3 games unfortunately, the highlight being 76 by Dinesh Fonseka for Black B. Wickets for bowlers were fairly even across the games, but mention must be made of Andrew Scott's 10 overs 1/12 which was as economical as it gets for a pace bowler.
Black Development 126/10 lost to EDCA 127/6
Scorecard here
D Fonseka 76
Best bowling
D Fonseka 10 overs 1/29

S Rajwer 2 x stumpings 2 x wkt catches
BB J Young 7.5 overs 2/42
B Wojt 9 overs 2/37
J Shoston Burnett 7 overs 2/31
Burgundy A a/o 149 went down to Manukau 153/4 in 45 overs, but fought right until the end in the field.
Batting first Burgundy didn't put enough runs on the board with the top order failing to fire. The batting scorecard was saved from total embarrassment by Dylan Budler and Andrew Scott who came together when we were 83/8 and lasted to 147.
D Budler 47

Unfortunately Michael Coetzer has what looks to be a serious knee injury (his other knee!) which isn't good news.
Black A - a win!
Batting first Black A scored 229/9 Ullrich Boshoff on 107*
In reply Western were all out for 146 with wickets spread amongst 7 of 8 bowlers.
W Healiss 10 overs 3/45

We hear it rained on the shore today - not a drop in Onehunga so hopefully remains that way.

Lots of weird weather went on today - thunder and lightening but no rain. Perhaps the atmosphere wasn't quite right for us.
Don't forget to leave with plenty of time to be there by 9am Monday for a 10am start time.
Thanks to Graeme Budler, Helen Robinson, Karen Steyn, Noel Thomson, Karen Wilkinson, Shane Young for all your help today, and to anyone else who chipped in. Scoring may be harder tomorrow with parents off at work supporting their cricketers, so let me know if you can help.
