There have been some very tough decisions to be made in the magic
formula that makes up team selection. There will be a number of players who
have missed out on A selection and will be disappointed. In the end, the
selectors have to make a call on, is this player in the top 4 spinners? Is this
player in the top four openers? Is the player in the top 8 middle order batsmen
etc.
But we hope we have the balance right. Many hours were spent deliberating and calling outside advisers to ensure fairness, in addition to performances in trials.

We are required to have 2 reasonably balanced sides in the A
division. This has been a directive of Auckland cricket over the years so
players get a chance to do more, and get seen. We want to win the tournament as
well – it’s always the aim and last year we came 1st and second in the As. This
year we would like a Development side to win as well. We are the only district required to have 4
sides in the competition.
Our development sides are strong but we are still filling a
few positions to get the balance right and because of late unexpected player
unavailability (we are allowed to name 26 in Dev, 24 in A)
The boys named below
will be capped but we have some decisions to make about the rest of the
Development squad so some players will be added in the next few days.
The 4 teams (black
and burgundy), captains and coaches will be named on Tuesday night at capping.

I know a number of you can’t make capping. If you haven’t
let me know, please do.
The teams will be posted on the North Harbour Blog later that night.

There’s always a lot of intensity surrounding selection of
players but it pays to remember why you are playing. Passion for cricket.
I recently did an interview with a former Black Cap and he was talking about a time as a bowler when he got smashed all over the park during a series. He said: “It was a massive confidence destroyer. Things had been going quite well up until then and in lots of ways that’s the thing that has had the most effect on me in the terms of teaching me resilience. It taught me not to give up on things - there is light at the end of the tunnel but you can’t get to it unless you keep going.” Just a little thing that I thought was best shared!

Development squad has a few to be added.
Unfortunately we have had some late withdrawals in this group which hasn’t
helped. We like to try to name 13 to cover for injury in the A
side (happens every year!). If a player isn’t named in the Development squad,
they can’t move up as cover for A during the tournament.
